Besançon, France
I was in Besançon for several days in June, 2008, and (except for the present words) I last edited this document on July 15, 2008.
The photographs below are from the old city, within the bend of the River Doubs, or from near the river on the other side.
Pavement
Parking of cars
The greenest part of the old city is used for a parking lot. Elsewhere in town, one does see cars parked on sidewalks. But this does not seem to be a big problem. There is little car traffic in the roads. There are also cops on bicycle who give out tickets for ill-parked cars.
City trees
Greenery is not needed to make a city attractive. One can be reminded of this by noting Besançon's introduction of a large tree to what had apparently been an empty place. The tree will be nice when it can stand on its own without the protection surrounding it; but would one have noticed a lack of trees before?
